Rwanda’s Two Dry Seasons — The best time to visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking
Rwanda has two distinct dry seasons, and both are excellent for gorilla trekking.
Long Dry Season: June to September (Peak Season)
June, July, August, and September are the most popular months to trek gorillas in Rwanda — and for good reason. These months bring the clearest skies, the driest trails, and the most comfortable trekking conditions.
- Trails into the Virunga volcanoes are at their firmest and easiest to navigate
- Morning visibility from the park entrance at Kinigi can be spectacular
- Wildlife viewing throughout Rwanda is excellent — great time to combine gorillas with an Akagera National Park safari
- Temperatures are cooler (Kinigi sits at 2,500+ metres elevation), so pack warm layers
The catch: This is also peak tourism season. Gorilla permits sell out months in advance. Book your permit at least 4–6 months ahead if you plan to visit June–September. “best time to visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking”
Vehicle recommendation: A Toyota RAV4 ($60/day) handles the Kigali–Musanze road easily in dry season. If you are combining Rwanda gorillas with a trip into Uganda, upgrade to a Toyota Prado or Land Cruiser ($100/day). See our Kigali self-drive car hire guide for road tips.

Short Dry Season: December to February (Best Value)
December, January, and February are Rwanda’s secret sweet spot for gorilla trekking. Conditions are almost as good as the long dry season, but with significantly fewer visitors.
- Trails are dry and manageable
- Permits are easier to obtain, sometimes at shorter notice
- Lodges and accommodation around Musanze often run lower-season rates
- Excellent combination with Christmas and New Year travel
Note: December is a transitional month — the short rains often extend into early December. The second half of December through February tends to be reliably dry.
Vehicle recommendation: Any vehicle in our fleet handles the Volcanoes NP route comfortably in this season. The Toyota RAV4 is the most popular and cost-effective choice for the Kigali–Musanze drive.
The Rainy Seasons — Possible, But Prepare “Best time to visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking”
Long Rainy Season: March to May
March, April, and May are Rwanda’s wet months. Rainfall in the Virunga mountains can be heavy, particularly in April and May. Trekking is still permitted and the gorillas are still there — but the experience changes.
- Trails become slippery and muddy — sturdy waterproof boots are essential
- Treks may take longer and feel more physically demanding
- Permits are readily available with little advance booking required
- This is the “green season” — Rwanda is spectacularly lush and photogenic
- Birding is excellent; many migratory species are present
- Lodge prices are at their lowest and negotiable
Who should consider this season? Budget-conscious travellers, photographers who want moody, atmospheric landscapes, and anyone who finds August crowds unappealing.
Vehicle recommendation: A Toyota Prado or Land Cruiser is strongly recommended during the long rains if you plan any unpaved roads. If your trip is Kigali–Musanze only on tarmac, a RAV4 is still fine.
Short Rainy Season: October and November
October and November bring Rwanda’s shorter rainy period. Rain tends to come in afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours, so mornings are often clear — which is actually useful for gorilla trekking (treks start early).
- Morning treks are often dry; afternoon rain arrives later
- Trails can be muddy but are generally manageable
- Permits available at relatively short notice compared to peak season
- The Virunga landscape is green and beautiful
- A good time for combination trips — combine Volcanoes NP with Nyungwe Forest before the December rains ease off
Vehicle recommendation: RAV4 or Prado — both suitable for this season on the Kigali–Musanze tarmac road.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I trek gorillas in Rwanda in the rainy season? Yes — gorilla trekking runs year-round at Volcanoes National Park. Rainy season treks are harder underfoot but still excellent wildlife experiences. Permits are easier to book and prices are often lower at lodges.
How far in advance should I book a gorilla permit? For peak season (June–September), book 4–6 months ahead. For the short dry season (December–February), 4–8 weeks is usually sufficient. For rainy season months, 2–4 weeks ahead is often fine.
Do I need a 4×4 to drive to Volcanoes National Park? Not strictly, but high clearance is helpful on the approach road to Kinigi. Our Toyota RAV4 from $60/day is perfectly suitable year-round for the Kigali–Musanze–Volcanoes NP route.
What time does gorilla trekking start? Briefings at park HQ (Kinigi) begin at 7:00–8:00 AM. Aim to arrive by 6:45 AM. If you are driving from Kigali on the same morning, you need to leave Kigali no later than 4:30–5:00 AM — most visitors stay overnight in Musanze the night before.
